Los Cabos Spotlight: Peter Crossley, co-founder of Destination Mexico

Destination Mexico is a destination management company with a rich history in Mexico, since being established in 1988, with locations in Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita, Cancun, Riviera Maya, and Los Cabos. Over its 35-year history, Destination Mexico has served clients from more than 60 countries around the world.

The company was conceived to cater to the growing market opening up for deluxe visitors looking for more high-end services. Peter Crossley was one of the the first members of SITE (Specialized Incentive Travel Experts) in Mexico, and he saw the potential for this
market first-hand at events such as, SITE University, realizing Mexico would definitely represent an enormous attraction for this kind of business.

Here’s what Crossley has to share about his longstanding company:

In what ways has tourism to Mexico changed from 1988 until now?

Since 1988, the travel industry in Mexico has grown and diversified tremendously, and in so many ways. Back then, it was largely limited to tour operators and travel agencies offering “package” holidays. With the advent of the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Corporate and Events) industry, the Mexican travel industry is now a worldwide magnet with state-of-the-art facilities and world-class luxury hotels — offering visitors a plethora of opportunities and attractions.

Which feature of Destination Mexico seems to be the most popular among your clients?

Destination Mexico has enjoyed 35 years of continuous growth, beginning in 1988 when we
had a sporadic tour operating business coming from some of the European markets. Even back then, we knew we had fierce competition. If we were to stand out, we would have to prove
ourselves as absolutely reliable, and completely honest, and upfront with our clients. We believe this has been a constant feature of all our dealings since, and one which our clients have always appreciated.

What has been one of Destination Mexico’s most memorable moments since its founding?

There would be far too many memorable moments throughout our 35-year career to list here,
but one which is quite recent and will stick in our minds as remarkable is the fact that during
the pandemic we were able to keep all of our staff together. Like everyone else in the industry,
we had basically no business for two years. As we consider the members of our staff to be
the glue which holds everything together in this hectic business of travel, we are extremely
grateful that we were able to achieve this.

Why was Los Cabos chosen as one of Destination Mexico’s destinations?

In 1988, Los Cabos was known almost exclusively as a deep-sea fishing destination. There was
very little tourism infrastructure at the time, but the potential was there and easy to see. We
decided to open our Los Cabos office in 2002 on the strength of the luxury hotels that had
already been developed there, as well as our belief in what Los Cabos would become in the
following years as far as the incentive industry was concerned. And obviously, we were not
mistaken as Los Cabos has become one of the most attractive destinations for the incentive
market.

Do you have any plans for the future for Destination Mexico?

The next generation of the Crossley family is preparing to take over the company. As we move
forward into the future, we have no doubt that Destination Mexico will continue to thrive
based on the firm conviction that integrity and care — not only for our clients, but also for our
vendors and wonderful staff — will contribute to the continued growth of the company under
their wing. For more information on Destination Mexico, visit https://www.destination-mexico.com/dmcloscabos.html.
