Los Cabos Spotlight: Ivan Guaderrama, artist and gallery owner

Born in Chihuahua, but raised in New Mexico and Colorado, Ivan Guaderrama had initial plans to be a doctor. However, four years into his medical studies, he realized that his heart was deeply rooted in art. Guaderrama created and sold his art throughout his medical education, and in his mid-30s — during a clinical practice — it became clear to him that art was his true calling. This revelation led him to open his first art gallery in 2010 and leave medicine behind.

Let’s get to know the artist, and owner of the interactive art gallery, located in the heart of San Jose Del Cabo in the Art District:

Tell us about your journey into the arts.

My initial foray into the arts started with piano lessons in middle school, followed by a variety of art classes during my high school years, including woodwork and other mediums. These early experiences culminated in my formal studies at the Art Institute of Denver, marking a significant milestone in my artistic journey.

Where did you learn the programming needed to create your innovative and unique art gallery app?

After relocating to Los Cabos and reopening my gallery, I returned to school two years later to study programming and technology development. This education was a gateway into a new realm where art and technology converge. It empowered me to create interactive art pieces that connect people to the artwork, and to each other, through sensory experiences and robotic interfaces. This journey later led to the development of the Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery App, further enabling me to share messages of love and faith through augmented reality.

Christianity is a core element of your artwork. Can you describe your spiritual experience, and was your art different before that?

My encounter with Christianity in Los Cabos was a turning point. Initially focused on fame and wealth, I soon realized the hollowness of such pursuits. A profound experience at a Christian conference in Colombia reshaped my perspective and helped me find my true purpose. This spiritual awakening not only influenced my personal life but also transformed my art, leading to the creation of interactive artworks that embody my newfound values and beliefs.

What is a typical day like for you, and what inspires you when creating new art?

My days are quite structured and disciplined, reflecting my commitment to both personal and professional growth. Mornings begin with reading about personal development or Bible scripture, followed by a gym session. After breakfast, I head to the office where my schedule varies. Some days are filled with meetings with my marketing, sales, or management teams. On days without meetings, I dive into experiments, creating new codes for interactive artworks and recently, exploring the incredible possibilities with artificial intelligence. This constant evolution in my daily routine fuels my creativity and innovation in art.

Why did you decide to open your gallery in Los Cabos?

Initially invited by a hotel in Los Cabos for an exhibition, I took the opportunity to explore the city, particularly the art district of San José. Despite its small size, I found something magical about it – the perfect setting for my gallery. The blend of local charm and artistic potential in San José was irresistible.

Do you have a favorite piece, and if so, why?

Selecting a favorite piece is challenging, as many hold special significance. One favorite is a painting in my gallery that creates musical notes when people touch it and each other – a beautiful interaction of art and human connection. Another, is a laser-cut, three-layered metal wall sculpture of a heart — painted to create a 3D effect. There’s also an angel piece that comes to life with my app, delivering the message: “You are God’s masterpiece.” Lastly, my recent collection, featuring Jesus Christ smiling, holds a special place in my heart.

Can people purchase your jewelry, sculptures, and paintings online?

Yes, our interactive art, sculptures, and paintings are available on our online store. We have a warehouse in Colorado from where many pieces are shipped. Original artworks, painted by me, are sent directly from Los Cabos worldwide. Currently, our jewelry is exclusive to Los Cabos and our gallery visitors. We also offer limited edition printed canvases, with interactive features, shipped from Colorado. As a company, we aim to share a message of love and faith — offering a variety of price points to accommodate different budgets and ensuring our art is accessible to everyone.

In your Instagram photos, many of your gallery visitors look so happy. What do you think it is about your art that makes them feel that way? Does that make you happy as well to see their reactions?

I believe the joy my gallery visitors experience is deeply rooted in both the interactive nature and the profound messages conveyed through my art. My work is an embodiment of faith, love, and my personal understanding of God. These themes resonate with people on a profound level, offering an emotional connection that goes beyond mere visual appeal. Witnessing their reactions to these aspects of my art, which reflect my diverse experiences and deep passion, not only fills me with immense happiness but also reaffirms my commitment to my life’s work as an artist.

Any plans for the future you would like to share?

We’re excited about a major upcoming project to create augmented reality experiences throughout Los Cabos. These experiences, accessible via Instagram — without needing an app download — will allow visitors to interact with art across the city. Here’s a link to our first experience for you and your readers to try – just point your phone at the floor and wall to initiate, and feel free to walk around or record it for your Instagram stories.
